The NBA confirmed on Wednesday that former commissioner David Stern had died at the age of 77. Stern underwent emergency brain surgery after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage while eating lunch in New York on December 12. David was reportedly surrounded by his wife, Dianne, and family, according to the league. Stern served as NBA commissioner for 30 years and is still involved with the league as commissioner emeritus. “I had a court-side seat to watch David in play for 22 years,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. He was both a mentor and a good friend to me. We put in countless hours in the office, in arenas, and on planes to wherever the game took us. David had great talents, like any NBA hero, but it was always about the fundamentals with him – preparation, attention to detail, and hard work.”
