If you enjoy watching golf, Annika Sorenstam is probably not a new name to you. Annika is a well-known former professional golfer from Sweden. As a professional player, she had won 90 international tournaments. Annika competed in nearly 150 events over the course of her sixteen-year career.

Annika Sorenstam was born in Bro Stockholm County on October 9, 1970. She is one of Tom Sorenstam’s and Gunilla Sorenstam’s two children. Her father was an executive member at IBM Office, and her mother worked at a bank. Charlotte, her younger sister, is her only sibling. She is also an accomplished golfer. Annika moved to the United States after graduating from high school and enrolled at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

The Road to Number One Female Golfer: From Sweden to the U.S.

In her teens, the Swedish golfer began competing in the Swedish National Championship. As an amateur, she won her first major event on the Swedish Golf Tour in 1990/91. Annika turned professional in 1992 and competed in her first US Women’s Open the following year. Sorenstam was named Ladies’ European Tour Rookie of the Year in 1993. In 1997, she won six tour events.

She won eight LPGA tournaments during the 2001 season. Annika began her ascension up the success ladder. By 2006, she had risen to the top of the Women’s Golf Ranking. She is the first golfer in LPGA or PGA history to win the same tournament five years in a row. On seven tours, the player did not win any major events in 2007. This drew a lot of criticism.

Annika gave her critics a hard slap during the 2008 season, propelling her game to the top. She was ranked second. She announced her retirement the same year. Annika has been busy with her Golf Academy and other business ventures since then.
