Tributes began pouring in on social media after Anthony “Rumble” Johnson died at the age of 38 following a long battle with illness.

MMA journalist Ariel Helwani confirmed the tragic news of Johnson’s passing.

“Horrible news: Anthony “Rumble” Johnson passed away today,” he tweeted.

“He was 38 years old. Johnson had been battling an illness for quite some time. One of the hardest hitters and most talented fighters in MMA history. Gone way too soon. May he rest in peace.”

Johnson’s manager Ali Abdelaziz tweeted hours ahead of Helwani’s confirmation, simply stating he was “heartbroken” by the passing.

He attended West Laurens High School before enrolling on a wrestling scholarship at Susanville, California’s Lassen College, where he later won the junior college national championship. He worked as a bouncer after college and began mixed martial arts at the age of 20 after a friend suggested it because of his wrestling experience.

Doctors recommended Johnson to stop his weight cut and rehydrate prior to the UFC 142 weigh-ins. Johnson’s weight was 11 pounds over the middleweight division limit at 197 pounds. The bout was still set to take place, but Johnson had to agree to give Belfort 20% of his winnings and not weigh more than 205 pounds on fight day. Johnson weighed in at 204.2 pounds on fight night, and Belfort won by submission in the opening frame. After the defeat, Johnson was disqualified from the promotion for continuing to be underweight.
