He previously spoke about the incident in a 2001 interview with The Advocate, but Spacey’s name was omitted from the article to prevent legal wrangling and unwanted publicity. With the encouragement of his family, boyfriend, and representatives, he was motivated to come out in 2017 as a result of the fallout from the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse allegations.

Rapp filed a lawsuit against Spacey for sexual assault, sexual battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress on September 9, 2020, in accordance with the Child Victims Act, which extended the statute of limitations for civil actions involving child sexual abuse in New York. He demanded $40 million in compensation. A guy who asked to remain nameless joined Rapp in the lawsuit against Spacey and accused the actor of abusing him sexually in 1983 when he was 14 and Spacey was 23. A jury decided on October 20, 2022, that Spacey did not sexually abuse Rapp.
