Miller relocated to London in order to pursue a comedic career. At the TBA Sketch Comedy Group, a comedy club that ran at the Gate Theatre Studio in Notting Hill throughout the 1990s, he met fellow Cambridge graduate Alexander Armstrong in 1992. At the Edinburgh Fringe in 1994, they presented their first full-length show together, and they later went back in 1996, when they were nominated for the Perrier Comedy Award.

As a result of their popularity, Armstrong and Miller, a television sitcom that aired for four seasons on Channel 4 and the Paramount Comedy Channel between 1997 and 2001, was commissioned. Miller began acting in movies as well, playing the lead in The Parole Officer, Steve Coogan’s debut feature (2001). In the 2003 movie Johnny English, he portrayed Bough, the sidekick to Rowan Atkinson’s lead character. He co-starred in The Prince and Me in 2004. He co-starred with Sarah Alexander in two seasons of the BBC television show The Worst Week of My Life in 2004 and 2005. Miller launched his It’s Not Rocket Science book tour from the Royal Society in London on July 23, 2012. Additionally, he shared a stage with Armstrong at the Channel 4 British Comedy Awards. In 2013, Miller appeared in a Room 101 episode and a Pointless Comic Relief episode. He made an appearance on The Celebrity Chase’s Christmas episode on December 13, 2014. Miller played Detective Inspector (DI) Richard Poole in the BBC-French co-produced television series Death in Paradise from 2011 until the start of series three in 2014.

Early in 2014, a third season of Death in Paradise was ordered. It was revealed on April 9th, 2013 that Miller would be leaving the show and will be succeeded by actor Kris Marshall. The first episode, in which Miller’s character was killed off, was finished filming at the end of May 2013. Miller returned to the character for a brief cameo in the tenth season’s dream scene in 2021.

Miller indicated that the move was motivated by personal factors. Although it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, logistically I was unable to continue. He continued by saying “It was just too complicated due to my personal circumstances, but I shall miss it dearly. I adore being here.” After he started shooting the first series, Miller’s wife found out she was expecting. Their separation strained their relationship and their relationship with his boys. Miller explored the subject “are we alone in the universe?” in his book The Aliens are Coming!, which was published in February 2016 and went on lecture tour. Miller co-starred with Caroline Catz in the six-part BBC sitcom I Want My Wife Back as Murray. He had an appearance in the 2016 comedy Power Monkeys on Channel 4. In 2018 he returned to the role of ‘Bough’, sidekick again to Rowan Atkinson’s title character, in the film Johnny English Strikes Again.
