William J. Laimbeer Jr., also known as Bill Laimbeer, is an American professional basketball coach and former player who currently serves as the head coach of the Women’s National Basketball Association’s Las Vegas Aces (WNBA). He was best known for his 11-year NBA stint with the Detroit Pistons, during his playing career. He also played for the Cleveland Cavaliers (1980-1982) and Basket Brescia Leonessa (1980-1982). The Early Years

Bill was the son of Mary Laimbeer and William Laimbeer Sr., an Owens-Illinois executive who rose to the position of company president. Susan Laimbeer is his sister. He was a Sleestak on the children’s TV show Land of the Lost before joining the Notre Dame. He went to Notre Dame for college and played basketball there.

Coach to Player

The Cavaliers drafted Laimbeer in 1979. On February 16, 1982, he was dealt to the Pistons, where he finished his career. Laimbeer won two NBA Championships with the Pistons in 1989 and 1990. He was a four-time NBA All-Star.

From 2002 through 2009, Laimbeer coached the Detroit Shock of the WNBA, winning three league championships in 2003, 2006, and 2008. He coached the New York Liberty from 2013 to 2017 before joining the Las Vegas Aces in 2018. Coach of the Year in the WNBA in 2003 and 2015.
