Nearly killed while doing his Job

Woodruff was embedded with the US 4th Infantry Division at Taji, Iraq, on January 29, 2006. For ABC’s World News Tonight, he was tasked to cover the handover of authority between US and Iraqi security forces.

Bob and his videographer, Doug Vogt, were wearing helmets and body armor while traveling in an armored truck. They captured film for a report by standing their heads over the vehicle’s hatch.

Bob and his cameraman were critically injured by a roadside explosion in Iraq.

Unfortunately, the truck collided with a roadside bomb, and Bob received shrapnel wounds to the head, nearly killing him. Fortunately, he was brought to an Air Force hospital in Iraq for surgery. His life was saved by a group of soldiers, medics, and military medical specialists. He was in a medically induced coma for 36 days at the Naval Hospital in Bethesda.

Bob’s recovery from a catastrophic brain injury was considered miraculous. He is currently assisting veterans and military personnel who have suffered a traumatic brain injury. Woodruff’s non-profit foundation has raised over $40 million and invested it in grassroots groups and initiatives that help veterans reintegrate into their communities around the country.

The Bob Woodruff Foundation announced a $1.6 million commitment on August 4, 2020. The funds will go to groups that help veterans, caregivers, and military families with programs and services. The foundation has invested about $6 million since January 2020.

Recognition and Awards

In 2005, Woodruff took over as co-anchor of ABC World News Tonight from Peter Jennings. He got the David Bloom Award for Excellence in Enterprise from the Radio and Television Associations a year later.
