Bryant Gumbel started his career with Today as the program’s main sports correspondent, providing twice-weekly features to the show, including a recurring series called Sportsman of the Week, which featured up-and-coming sportsmen. NBC announced in June 1981 that Tom Brokaw will leave Today to co-anchor NBC Nightly News with Roger Mudd starting in the spring of 1982.

The hunt for Brokaw’s successor was underway, and the first contenders were NBC News reporters John Palmer, Chris Wallace, Bob Kur, Bob Jamieson, and Jessica Savitch. During the summer of 1981, while Brokaw was on vacation, the applicants auditioned for his position.
