Early Life of Carole King:

Carole King was born Carol Joan Klein to a Jewish family in Manhattan, New York, United States. Eugenia Gingold and Sidney N. Klein were her parents when she was born. Her father was a firefighter for the New York City Fire Department, and her mother was a teacher.

When it came to her education, she started kindergarten at the age of four. After that, she attended James Madison High School. She went on to Queens College after that.

She co-wrote nearly two dozen great songs with her first husband, Gerry Goffin. She’s since written for others. In the 1970s, she recorded and performed her own songs with piano accompaniment. With Tapestry, she earned economic success after her debut album, Writer, flopped after 15 weeks at the top of the US album chart in 1971.

Her most successful solo album was Tapestry, which went over 20 weeks at No. 1 for a female performer. James Taylor’s 2010 duet Live at the Troubadour debuted at #4 and has already sold over 600,000 copies. Over 75 million albums sold worldwide. In 2012, she goes on hiatus. On July 3, 2016, she will perform the entire Tapestry live at the British Summer Time Festival in Hyde Park, London. In October 2016, it aired on UK SkyArts TV. 2017 saw an album. She later re-released One in fresh form. Her song “One” from her 1977 album “Simple Things” was renamed “One (2018)” to express her goal for America: “Love prevailed.”

She has occasionally acted in addition to singing. In 1975, she voiced the title character in an animated television special based on Maurice Sendak’s novels. In 1984, she co-starred in Goldilocks and the Three Bears with Tatum O’Neal, Hoyt Axton, and John Lithgow. On Gilmore Girls, she played Sophie, the owner of the Stars Hollow music store, three times. “Where You Lead (I Will Follow)” was also the series’ theme song, sung by King and her daughter Louise. In 2016’s Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, she reprised her role. King was Mrs. Johnstone in the original Broadway production of Blood Brothers.

Carole King was admitted into the ‘Songwriters Hall of Fame’ and the ‘Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’ after winning four ‘Grammy’ awards throughout the years. She has created over 400 songs that have been recorded by over 1000 musicians, earning her worldwide acclaim as a songwriter.

In 2012, she was honored by Berklee College of Music with the BMI Icon Award and an Honorary Doctorate. The next year, she received the Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award, and President Barack Obama honored her with the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, which she received at an all-star White House banquet.

Personal Life

Carole King has been married four times in her life, to Gerry Goffin, Charles Larkey, Rick Evers, and Rick Sorenson. In 1978, her third spouse died of a drug overdose. She has two children from her first two marriages. Louise Goffin and Sherry Goffin Kondor, musicians Louise and Sherry Goffin Kondor, artist Molly Larkey, and Levi Larkey are her four children.

Carole King is politically active, having endorsed John Kerry for President of the United States in 2004.
