Charley Pride (Charley Frank Pride) was born in Sledge, Mississippi, on March 18, 1934. Pisces is his zodiac sign. He was the eldest of eleven children born to destitute sharecroppers. The family consisted of eight boys and three daughters in all. He dropped out of school after grade eleven in 1953 and moved away from home to play baseball.

Career and Professional Life

Pride joined the Memphis Red Socks, a Negro League baseball team, in 1954. Despite his sports commitments, he made time to hone his musical abilities. Pride left semi-pro baseball and the American Negro League in 1960 to play for a C-team. He was also given the opportunity to try out for the Angels, but he was turned down. He began playing music in local nightclubs in 1960, which helped him gain experience. Pride’s abilities were quickly noticed by the Night Hawks, and he was invited to join them.

Snakes Crawl at Night and Just Between You and Me, which won a Grammy in 1968, are two of his best and most popular albums. (“All I Have to Offer You Is Me”) was Pride’s first number one single on the singles chart in 1964. He achieved his greatest musical success in the early to mid-1970s, when he became RCA Records’ best-selling performer since Elvis Presley. In 1971, a million-selling crossover hit called “Kiss an Angel Good Morning” was released. Charley Pride currently has almost 36 number one country singles under his belt. He has over 35 albums under his belt.

Charley Pride has had a long and successful career. Pride became a member of the Grand Ole Opry on May 1, 1993. He received the prestigious Pioneer Award from the Academy of Country Music in 1994. William Morrow published his memoirs, Pride: The Charley Pride Story, in 1994. Turner Broadcasting presented him with the Trumpet Award in 1996, honoring exceptional African-American achievement. His song “Roll On Mississippi” was declared the official anthem of his home state, a piece of Mississippi highway was named after him, and he gave a special Christmas performance at the White House for President and Mrs. Clinton.
