Youth Days

Christian Thomas began his playing career with the OHL London Knights at the junior level before transitioning to the professional field. He was chosen through the priority pick as the 13th overall player in 2008 and made his OHL debut. He was eventually traded by the Knights to the Generals in the middle of the campaign. Christian scored four goals total for both teams. Later, during the Generals’ subsequent season, he scored a total of 41 goals.

He also recorded 66 points at that time, 25 assists, four shorthanded goals, and four goals. Christian quickly rose to the top three in the categories of best shot, hardest shot, most dangerous in-goal area, and best stickhandler. He had 54 goals and 99 points in the 2010–11 season, leading the league in power play goals.

At that point, he had won the OHL player of the week three times and was in the league’s scoring lead for the playoffs. He won multiple awards throughout the year for having the greatest shot in the OHL Eastern Conference and being the “most dangerous in the goal area.” He has the most goals in the OHL thus far over these two seasons than any other player.

Christian did have a rough start to the following season, but he still managed to win player of the week. Christian recorded 67 points, 34 goals, and 33 assists throughout the course of 55 games. Later, he signed up to play with the Connecticut Whale in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Days of Professionals

Christian Thomas made his career debut with the New York Rangers on May 19, 2011. But he didn’t play his first professional game with the Connecticut Whale until April 13, 2012. Christian only contributed one assist and one goal to the Connecticut Whale. He then went back to play for the New York Rangers after that. In addition, he only made his NHL debut on February 23, 2013, in Montreal against the Montreal Canadiens. After his debut, he went back to the Whales and appeared in 73 games. He managed 19 goals and 16 assists over that time. They traded Christian to the Montreal Canadiens in 2013 after joining the Rangers.

Christian didn’t score his first NHL goal until February 12, 2015 against the Edmonton Oilers at the Bell Centre in Montreal Quebec, after making his long-awaited NHL debut. By year’s end, the Canadiens had also dealt him to the Coyotes in Arizona. They transferred him to the Springfield Falcons, an AHL team during his time there. He later made an appearance during the All-Star Break and played a single game with the Coyotes.

As a free agent, Christian agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with the Washington Capitals. After participating in games with that team, he signed with the AHL because he was unable to secure an NHL deal. He did, however, sign a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins’ affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Later, in 2018, he agreed to a one-year contract with Swedish club Rögle BK.

His first deal outside of the country was with the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). But four months later, he signed with Russian team Traktor Chelyabinsk of the Kontinental Hockey League, leaving the SHL (KHL). Christian played a total of 20 games during his time in the KHL, recording two goals and three points. He then joined the SC Bern of the National League after 2020. (NL).

International Competition

Christian Thomas is the team Canada’s representative in the international arena. At the 2010 IIHF World U18 Championships, one of his early international debuts, he recorded two goals and one assist in six games. The right winger helped Canada win the Spengler Cup back then in Davos, Switzerland.
