Christians Brothers Academy was where Connor Clifton went to school. While in high school, he was a prep hockey fanatic. He played for the New Jersey Hitmen in the former Empire Junior Hockey League (EJHL), the forerunner of today’s USPHL Elite Division, as a 14-year-old in 2009. He then joined the top team of the former EJHL (forerunner of today’s NCDC), the New Jersey Hitmen. As a 16-year-old, he had 12 points in 28 games for the Hitmen. Clifton was then selected 133rd overall in the fifth round of the NHL entry draft by the Arizona Coyotes. They did not, however, sign him.

After that, the young New Jersey native decided to further his hockey skills in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) (NCAA). He was then accepted to Quinnipiac University, where he spent the next four years as a member of the Quinnipiac Bobcats men’s ice hockey team. During the 2013-14 season, he began his freshman year at Quinnipiac. In association with the NCAA, Clifton appeared in 156 games. In fact, he had a total of 56 points. He also showed his offensive abilities, which are not a right-handed defenseman’s strongest suit.

All four seasons with the Quinnipiac Bobcats, the New Jersey native was named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Hockey All-Academic Team. While in his junior year, Clifton was named captain of the Quinnipiac Bobcats (2016-17). He was also named to the NCAA East All-Frozen Four Team and the ECAC Hockey All-Tournament Team. With 284 penalty minutes in 156 games, the New Jersey native graduated from Quinnipiac as the school’s all-time penalty minutes leader. When Quinnipiac reached the Frozen Four in 2016, he was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team. However, they were defeated by the University of North Dakota in the National Championship game.

During his time with the New Jersey Hitmen in the 2011-12 season, USA Hockey came knocking. They signed Connor Clifton to work with the US National Team Development Program for parts of two seasons. Clifton also placed second in the 2013 Under-18 World Championships.
