Winnik played for the Wexford Raiders for two seasons in the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League before enrolling at the University of New Hampshire in Hockey East (OPJHL). Winnik was chosen by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 265th pick of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. With 18 goals and 40 points in his second season with the Wildcats, he started to find his scoring touch. He was one of UNH’s finest players and was selected to the NCAA Northeast Regional All-Tournament team. Daniel improved on his breakout season in his junior year, leading the Wildcats in assists and ranking seventh in Hockey East scoring with 41 points. By the end of his rookie NHL season, Winnik had established himself as a trustworthy Coyotes player, and head coach Wayne Gretzky thought he was the team’s finest penalty taker. After a promising start to his NHL career, Dan experienced a sophomore slump in 2008-09, scoring just 7 points in 49 games. Despite rarely being used as a backup forward, he was sent to San Antonio on January 1, 2009, for a five-game conditioning assignment. In the next 2009–10 season, Winnik quickly recovered, regaining a checking line position and regaining his scoring touch, matching his career high of 15 assists. After he and the Sharks were unable to agree on a new contract, Winnik signed a two-year free agent contract with division rivals, the Anaheim Ducks, on July 20, 2012. Winnik played on all four lines and showed off good penalty killing abilities for the Maple Leafs in the 2014–15 season, contributing 25 points in 58 games. On February 25, 2015, with the Maple Leafs already out of the postseason picture, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Zach Sill, a 2015 fourth-round pick, and a 2016 second-round pick. Winnik played for the Penguins for 21 games, scoring 2 goals and adding 9 points, but he was unable to help them reach the postseason.
