Early Life

David Adkins, better known by his stage name Sinbad, was born on November 10, 1956, in Benton Harbor, Michigan, to Louise and Rev. Dr. Donald Beckley Adkins. David attended Benton Harbor High School and grew up in Michigan with his five siblings, Donna, Dorothea, Mark, Michael, and Donald. He graduated from high school in 1974 and went on to the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado, to further his education from 1974 to 1978. He lettered two seasons for the basketball team in college.

Sinbad joined the US Air Force after college and worked as a boom operator on KC-135 Stratotankers. He was stationed at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, Kansas, with the 384th Air Refueling Wing. He performed stand-up comedy in downtown Wichita on a regular basis when he was there. As a comedian, he competed in the Air Force Talent Contest in 1981. He was almost dishonorably fired for his actions, as he routinely acted out and went AWOL. He was subsequently expelled from the Air Force for “parking [his] automobile in the wrong location,” according to him.

Career

Inspired by Sinbad the Sailor, he selected the stage name “Sinbad.” He tried to kickstart his entertainment career after leaving the military by appearing on “Star Search.” On the show, he was actually fairly successful, even defeating fellow comic Dennis Miller to reach the finals. In the end, he was defeated by John Kassir. However, his appearance on “Star Search” helped him get wider notoriety, and he was finally cast as Byron Lightfoot in the short-lived sitcom “The Redd Foxx Show.” Then, in 1987, he was cast in the television sitcom “A Different World.” Sinbad had previously made a brief appearance on “The Cosby Show” as auto salesman Davis Sarrette, but this time he played Coach Walkter Oakes on “A Different World.” From 1988 through 1991, he was a member of the cast.

Sinbad was given the opportunity to have his own show on Fox as his popularity soared. The first episode of “The Sinbad Show” aired in September 1993. Sinbad plays David Bryan, a 35-year-old bachelor who decides to adopt two foster children, in the sitcom. Part of the plot was inspired by Sinbad’s own personal experiences; at the time, he had shared custody of his two children, Royce and Paige, and was learning a lot about single parenting and fatherhood in real life. Despite his nomination for the Favorite Television Actor Award at the 1995 Kids’ Choice Awards, “The Sinbad Show” was not renewed for a second season and was cancelled in April 1994.

He owed American Express $375,000, Bank of America $30,000, the state of California $2.3 million, and the IRS $8.3 million in total. The $8.3 million debt is for taxes owed from 1998 to 2006. Sinbad’s assets include a 2007 BMW 750 and a 2010 Lincoln Navigator, as well as a monthly income of $16,000. Sinbad’s debts will be reorganized under Chapter 13 bankruptcy, rather than being fully erased as in Chapter 7. Chapter 7 is far more damaging to a person’s credit and is only used when the debtor has no assets or income.
