Early life

Waterman was born in Clapham, London, the youngest of nine children to Rose Juliana (née Saunders) and Harry Frank Waterman. London is a city in the United Kingdom. Ken, Peter, Stella, Norma, and Myrna were among the siblings who lived at 2 Elms Road in Clapham Common South Side. Harry Waterman worked for British Railways as a ticket collector. By the time Dennis was born, two older sisters, Joy and Vera, had already left the house, and another brother, Allen, had died as a child.

Waterman grew up with a strong interest in boxing. His father was an amateur boxer who forced all of his sons to box. Dennis’s older brother Ken began teaching him boxing when he was three years old, and when he was ten, Dennis joined Caius Boxing Club. Peter, another older brother, was a welterweight boxing champion.
