Doug Glanville was born Douglas Metunwa Glanville on August 25, 1970, in Hackensack, New Jersey. Cecil E. Glanville, his father, was a psychiatrist. He was a childhood friend of former New Jersey Nets head coach Lawrence Frank. Teaneck High School is where he received his high school diploma.

Doug Glanville’s name was entered in the 1991 MLB Draft, where he was selected in the first round and 12th overall by the Chicago Clubs. Despite being drafted in 1991, he did not make his MLB debut until 1996. He was a member of the Chicago Cubs until 1997 before joining the Philadelphia Phillies in 1998.
