He went to Santa Margarita Catholic High School and was a football and baseball player.

Doug passed up a baseball scholarship offer from the University of Southern California in order to sign with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as their 10th round (293rd overall) draft pick out of high school. He signed with the Baltimore Orioles in 2008 and blew out his knee. The following season, his contract was up. He was an undergraduate at Pepperdine University and was admitted into the Pepperdine University School of Law before being given a job in baseball.
