Dru vanished after leaving work on the evening of November 22, 2003. Alfonso Rodriguez Jr, a Level 3 sex offender in Minnesota, was arrested on December 1, 2003.

Rodriguez had been freed from prison six months before Dru went missing after serving a 23-year sentence. Sjodin’s body was discovered outside Crookston, Minnesota, five months after Rodriguez was arrested.

So, on September 22, 2006, the murderer was found guilty and sentenced to death. The murder case drew widespread national attention, prompting reforms in sex offender registration legislation.

On Tuesday, US prosecutors announced that Dru Sjodin’s murderer will not face the death penalty. In North Dakota, U.S. Attorney Mac Schneider filed a notification with the court dropping his effort to seek the death penalty for Rodriguez Jr.

Schneider claimed in an interview that he spoke with Dru’s mother and other relatives about the situation. He, however, refused to discuss their reaction to the case update.

People were interested in learning more about Rodriguez Jr. after hearing this news. According to Schneider, the only feasible penalty for Rodriguez Jr is life in jail without the possibility of parole. Schneider was unsure when formal sentencing will occur.

Similarly, Schneider stated that the murderer would die in federal jail. Furthermore, this is not the first time in the case that Rodriguez Jr has evaded the death penalty.

Previous-U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson decided in September 2021 that the coroner’s deceptive testimony, lawyers’ inability to disclose the possibility of an insanity defense, and proof of severe post-traumatic stress disorder violated Rodriguez Jr.’s constitutional rights.

In 2007, a jury found Alfonso Rodriguez Jr. guilty of Dru Sjodin’s kidnapping and murder and sentenced him to death. He was sentenced to death, but now he will not face it.

Rodriguez Jr will now spend the rest of his life in prison. Under federal law, that is the mandatory minimum penalty for kidnapping and killing Dru. Furthermore, Rodriguez Jr. is the only individual convicted of capital murder in North Dakota.
