She discovered how mobile genetic elements change a person’s genome. Charpentier played a key role in demonstrating how the bacterium acquires vancomycin resistance in the year 2020. They collaborated on the creation of a genome editing technology (through CRISPR). For two years, Charpentier was an assistant research scientist at the New York University Medical Center.
