For the 2003 film Mystic River, she was nominated for an Awards Circuit Community Award for Best Cast Ensemble, alongside Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, and Kevin Bacon. The next year, she starred in The Day After Tomorrow, a natural catastrophe film directed by Ronald Emmerich, and The Phantom of the Opera, a musical drama directed by Joel Schmacher. In 2009, the actress starred in the Japanese animated film Dragonball Evolution. Three years later, from 2011 until 2019, she starred as the lead in the television series Shameless. She also directed two episodes of the Shameless television series.
