In Colombia, where he also trafficked marijuana, Jung picked up the skill of smuggling cocaine.

Jung earned a living by bringing copious quantities of drugs into the country. He subsequently joined the Medellin cartel, which in the late 1970s and early 1980s was in charge of 85% of the cocaine imported into the US.

Early Life

In Boston, Massachusetts, George Jung was born to Frederick and Erminalia Jung. In Weymouth, Massachusetts, he was raised. Although Jung did not perform well in the classroom, he was a great football player. Jung was referred to as “a natural leader” by his classmates.

A police officer made Jung’s first arrest for prostitute solicitation. After completing his senior year at Weymouth High School in 1961, Jung enrolled in the University of Southern Mississippi. He attempted to earn a degree in advertising but was unable to do so. As a recreational drug, marijuana attracted Jung’s attention.

He made a connection at the Playboy Club, where he was staying, and they helped each other smoke marijuana. The link was detained for carrying heroin. However, he did let the authorities know about Jung in order to ask for a lighter punishment. After disputing with the judge about the justification for sending someone to prison “for crossing an imaginary line with a handful of plants,” Jung was sentenced to the Federal Penal Institution “Danbury.”

Career

Prior to his involvement in drug smuggling, George tried and failed to enroll in the University of Southern Mississippi’s advertising program. He soon launched a modest marijuana business. Jung was detained after being found in possession of too much marijuana, but his punishment altered the course of his life.

While doing his time at the Danbury Correctional Facility in Connecticut, Jung unintentionally made a connection that may ultimately result in the creation of one of the most potent drug cartels in history. There, he met Colombian Carlos Lehder, a fellow prisoner, who eventually introduced him to cocaine. After joining the Medellin cartel shortly after their release, both men developed more effective and sneaky ways to import cocaine from Colombia into the United States.

Their cartel quickly became successful, supplying 80% of the cocaine in the world, and the market grew. Despite the final breakup of Jung and Lehder as business partners, it gave Jung the opportunity to collaborate with Pablo Escobar, the infamous drug lord and narco-terrorist.

After being discovered in possession of many pounds of cocaine, Jung was taken into custody, but he later escaped bail. He promptly went back to his smuggling operations, was caught, and received a 60-year prison term. After George Jung consented to give a witness statement against his old accomplice Lehder, his sentence was reduced to twenty years. He left jail in November 2014 and was freed. Two years later, due to a parole violation, he was sent back to a California prison. The prisoner was released in July 2017 after completing his term.
