Gladys Berejiklian

While the world is dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak, a number of politicians and other notable figures have come out in support of health workers and to express condolences to the families of those who have died.
Similarly, Australia’s Gladys Berejiklian is a powerful personality who has exhorted her people to be strong and faithful during these trying times.

What is the net worth of Gladys Berejiklian?

Gladys Berejiklian’s net wealth is unknown. Gladys Berejiklian has a net worth of roughly $10 million. Her annual remuneration is $401,000. She is one of Australia’s most powerful persons. Berejiklian, on the other hand, voiced support for the Reproductive Health Care Reform Bill, a private member’s bill aimed at decriminalizing abortion in New South Wales, in August–September 2019.

Early years

Gladys Berejiklian was born in Manly Hospital, Sydney, on September 22, 1970 (age 50), the eldest of three daughters born to Armenian immigrant parents Krikor and Arsha. During the Armenian genocide in 1915, her grandparents were orphaned by Turkish forces. Berejiklian was born in Armenia and spoke solely Armenian until the age of five, when she began studying English. She remained active in the Armenian-Australian society, sitting on the Armenian National Committee of Australia for a period of time. She attended a remembrance ceremony for the Armenian genocide’s 100th anniversary in Yerevan in 2015.

North Ryde High School, which became Peter Board High School in 1986, was a public, co-educational school in North Ryde where Berejiklian attended. She used to be a Girl Guide and still supports the organization. She graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts in 1992 and a graduate diploma in international studies in 1996, as well as a Masters in Commerce from the University of New South Wales (2001).

Career in politics

When former Opposition Leader Peter Collins, who had represented the Willoughby area since 1981, chose to retire, Berejiklian won the Liberal preselection for Willoughby in 2003. Even by northern Sydney standards, Willoughby has always been a safe Liberal seat; counting its tenure as Middle Harbour, it has been held by the Liberals, their predecessors, or a conservative independent for all but one term from 1927.

However, she was up against Pat Reilly, the longstanding mayor of Willoughby, who came close to winning the seat based on Labor preferences. Berejiklian ultimately won by 144 votes, with the Liberals losing by 10.9 points. After a large swing of 14.5 points, Berejiklian easily defeated Reilly in a rematch, restoring Willoughby to its previous status as a comfortably safe Liberal riding. Since then, she hasn’t faced a meaningful challenge, with Labor frequently falling to third place.

In 2005, Berejiklian was promoted to the opposition front bench as Shadow Minister for Mental Health by Peter Debnam, and in 2006, he was nominated to the opposition front bench portfolio of Transport by Peter Debnam. Following the 2007 State election, Opposition Leader O’Farrell gave her the shadow portfolio of Citizenship in his Shadow Ministry.

Government of Baird

Following the resignation of Barry O’Farrell, Mike Baird was elected Leader of the New South Wales Liberal Party, and thus Premier, on April 17, 2014. Baird’s deputy, Berejiklian, was elected. In a later government move, Berejiklian was sworn in as the Minister for the Hunter on April 23, 2014, in addition to her other responsibilities.

Following a cabinet change announced on 1 April 2015 by Premier Baird following the 2015 state election, Gladys Berejiklian was appointed Treasurer of New South Wales and Minister for Industrial Relations. Berejiklian guided New South Wales’ return to surplus as Treasurer. This was the first time in more than 20 years that New South Wales has been proclaimed debt-free. She was also in charge of the state’s energy network’s partial privatization.

In her party, Berejiklian authorized a conscience vote on the issue. The bill was opposed by a large number of Liberal Party conservatives. Three of these lawmakers, Tanya Davies, Matthew Mason-Cox, and Lou Amato of the Legislative Council, “expressed unhappiness with Berejiklian’s handling of the measure.” They had asked Berejiklian to “intervene to block the bill’s “fast-tracking” and establish a joint select committee to look into the law overhaul” on several occasions. Berejiklian, on the other hand, turned down their pleas.

On September 16, 2019, the three declared that the following day, they will organize a party leadership spill motion against Berejiklian. Senior ministers praised Berejiklian and criticized the trio’s actions, even conservative ministers who opposed the law. The party’s right-wing section also stated that the spill was not sanctioned by them. The trio called off the spill the next morning, claiming they had gained “additional concessions” on bill revisions, implying that their amendments would be considered during the Legislative Council debate. The law subsequently passed Parliament with revisions on September 26, 2019, and went into effect on October 2, 2019, as the Abortion Law Reform Act 2019.

Berejiklian claimed to have been in a “close personal relationship” with Daryl Maguire from 2015 until August 2020 as part of her testimony to an Independent Commission Against Corruption inquiry in October 2020. Maguire was a fellow Liberal MP until he resigned in 2018 after a prior investigation found that he had sought improper payments. As a result, parliament passed a vote of no confidence in the government. She received 47–38 votes in the lower house and 21–20 votes in the upper chamber, with the Liberal president casting the decisive vote.

Husband

Gladys Berejiklian is not married and has never been married before. She does, however, back the Australian republican movement. She usually attends Armenian Apostolic Church events.
