Gugu Mbatha-Raw was born Gugulethu Sophia Mbatha in the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England on April 21, 1983.

Anne Raw, a Caucasian English nurse, is her mother, and Patrick Mbatha, a Black South African doctor, is her father.

Her father was a South African student activist who campaigned against apartheid. Later, he joined the ‘African National Congress (ANC),’ but he fled South Africa because to the threat of being sent to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandel was imprisoned for for two decades. After that, the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR assisted him in resettling in England.

Gugu Mbatha-parents Raw’s split when she was just a year old. As a result, she was reared by her mother in the Oxfordshire town of Witney.
