He started competing in Late Model races the following year and finished fifth in the standings. The following year, he won two races.

In 1997, Parker started competing in the Southeast NASCAR touring series known as the Slim Jim All Pro Series. Parker was the most well-liked driver in the series after winning one race. In the Jiffy Lube Miami 300 at Homestead, he made his NASCAR debut in the No. 78 Mark III Financial Chevrolet, finishing 23rd. Parker went back to the 78 in 1998 with the goal of finishing the entire calendar. He was let go after the majority of his attempts fell short of the standards. He didn’t compete again until the AC Delco 200, where he drove his father’s No. 53 B.A.S.S Chevrolet to a sixth-place result.

Parker finished 18th in points and twice in the top five while driving his father’s car exclusively in 1999. He came in second to Tony Raines for the title of Rookie of the Year despite missing five races. In 2000, Team Marines sponsored Parker, who achieved his first career pole position at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
