Her father, Tom Vanderham, is a Dutch businessman, and her mother, Jill Janette Freda Belcha, is a professor of cardiovascular research at Ninewells Hospital in Scotland. The parents of Joanna divorced when she was a small child. She also has two sisters and a brother.

She made appearances in 2015 as Katherine “Kitty” McVitie in the BBC Two historical drama series “Banished” and Marian Maudsley in the BBC One romantic television movie “The Go-Between.”
