Childhood

Ryan was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1950 to an Irish Catholic family. Emmet William Ryan, his father, was a Baltimore Police Department homicide lieutenant and World War II veteran. The elder Ryan had been a member of the US Army’s 101st Airborne Division 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment Easy Company during the Battle of the Bulge in western Europe. Catherine Burke Ryan, his mother, was a nurse. Patriot Games revealed that he had a sister in Seattle. Ryan attended Boston College after graduating from Loyola High School (now Loyola Blakefield), a Roman Catholic Jesuit prep school in Towson, Maryland, in suburban Baltimore County. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics (with a strong minor in history) and was a rower. He joined the United States Marine Corps as a second lieutenant (via Officer Candidate School). He passed the Certified Public Accountant exam while waiting for the Corps to assign him.

Ryan served briefly as a Marine infantry platoon leader after completing officer training at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Quantico, Virginia. However, at the age of 23, his military career was cut short when his platoon’s helicopter, a CH-46 Sea Knight, crashed during a North Atlantic Treaty Organization exercise over the Greek island of Crete. Ryan’s back was severely injured in the crash. His back was improperly repaired by US Navy surgeons at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. This resulted in a lengthy recovery period (during which he became addicted to pain medications), after which he left the Marines, complete with a permanent disability and wearing a back brace. He passed his stockbroker exam and landed a job in the Baltimore office of Wall Street investment firm Merrill Lynch.

Ryan’s parents were killed in a plane crash at Chicago Midway International Airport 19 months after he was killed in Crete. He developed a phobia of flying that lasted for many years.

Ryan’s educational background was changed in the film adaptation of The Hunt for Red October to that of a 1972 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. Ryan says he grew up in the Penobscot River in Maine as Red October sails into it. According to the film, the helicopter crash occurred during his third year at the Academy, and he finished his senior year from his hospital bed. The film adaptation of Patriot Games also implies that he is an Annapolis graduate by briefly displaying a certificate on the wall of their home. Ryan’s Ph.D. is in economics rather than history in the 2018 Amazon Prime series.

Civilian career

While managing his clients’ portfolios, Ryan began to invest his own money, relying on a tip from an uncle about the workers’ takeover of the Chicago and North Western Railway to make about $6 million on a $100,000 investment. He did so well that one of Merrill Lynch’s senior vice presidents, Joe Muller, came to Baltimore to meet with him and invite him to the firm’s New York City headquarters near Wall Street. Muller’s daughter Caroline, nicknamed Cathy, is also present, as a senior medical student at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. They fall in love and get engaged right away.

Ryan throws out his back one night while having dinner with his fiancée. Cathy immediately takes him to Dr. Stanley Rabinowitz, professor of neurosurgery at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, to be evaluated. Rabinowitz later operates on Ryan’s back and quickly cures his chronic pain. (The surgeon is credited in a later novel as Sam Rosen, a doctor introduced in Without Remorse.) Ryan later persuades the government to discontinue his disability payments. Cathy later becomes an ophthalmic surgeon at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Wilmer Eye Institute and a professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins.

Ryan left the firm after four years, having amassed an $8 million net worth, and enrolled at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. for six doctoral courses in history. After a brief stint at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, he accepts a position as a civilian history professor at the United States Naval Academy. He has also written books on naval history, including Options and Decisions, Doomed Eagles, and Fighting Sailor, a biography of World War II Admiral William “Bull” Halsey in which he defends Halsey’s actions during the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
