Soccer was Jennifer Maia’s childhood sport. But when she was 15, she became interested in muay Thai and eventually switched to it. She won a number of national championships at the national level. She later began practicing boxing and mixed martial arts. At Centri de Boxe in Curitiba, Brazil, she made her professional boxing debut in March 2008. Michelle Bonassoli was defeated by her in a unanimous decision. Before switching to MMA, she later defeated Juliana de Aguiar and Lorena Nancy Lopez. Her MMA debut occurred in December 2009. All four of her first fight victories came in the opening round.

After defeating Vanessa Porto by a unanimous decision in March 2016, she was awarded the temporary Invicta FC Flyweight Championship title. Barb Honchak, the reigning champion, was stripped of her title and Maia was crowned the undisputed Invicta FC Flyweight World Champion after Honchak was unable to participate in a title unification match. Before giving up her championship in July 2018, she successfully defended it against Roxanne Modafferi and Agnieszka Niedzwiedz. 2018 saw her signing with the UFC.

Against Liz Carmouche at UFC Fight Night 133 in July 2018, she made her UFC debut. She lost her first match in the UFC. She was suspended for six months after testing positive for many prohibited substances (taken through contaminated supplements). At UFC Fight Night 148, she triumphed over Alexis Davis by majority decision. At UFC on ESPN 4, she was supposed to square off against Roxanne Modafferi. She was 3 pounds over the 126-pound weight limit for women’s flyweight non-title fights at 129 pounds. The fight moved to a catchweight fight after she was penalized 30% of her winnings. Modafferi was defeated by Maia in a unanimous decision.
