Jim began his professional career in 1959 at The Dallas Morning News in Texas. He had covered the assassination of John F. Kennedy there in 1963. After that, he worked as a political columnist for several years before becoming the City Editor in 1968.

Jim eventually got his start in television by working at KERA-TV in Dallas. He has previously worked as an on-air broadcaster, an editor for a nightly news program, and an Executive Director of Public Affairs. He even started working for PBS in Washington as a member of the Journalism Advisory Board, a Fellow at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and a Public Affairs Coordinator. During that time, he met Robert MacNeil and covered the Watergate tapes’ release as well as the Senate Watergate hearings.

Jim also worked as a correspondent for Robert on Thirteen/WNET New York, where he was promoted to co-anchor after two months.
