Joan Mitchell was a second-generation conceptual expressionist painter and printmaker best known for her huge abstract works with brilliant colors brushstroked on them.She was also one of the few female painters of her day whose work was praised by critics all around the world.

Joan was romantically connected with Jean-Paul Riopelle, a French-Canadian painter, after her divorce from Barney. Furthermore, from 1959 through 1979, the two were romantically involved but never married.

In the summer of 1955, Rossett and Jean met in Paris for the first time. The ex-couple soon bonded and were longterm friends and lovers because they had a passion for art.

Both of them had already excelled in the development of abstract paintings before they met.

Moreover, the former couple began dating in 1959 but did not live together. They maintained separate residences and studios in the Giverny area.

The ex-couple had a loving and tumultuous relationship for more than two decades. Before dissolving their romance in 1979, expressionist admirers noticed them drinking and dining together virtually every day.
