84 Lumber Founder Died On His 100 Birthday

The founder of 84 Lumber lived to be 100 years old, but he is no longer with us.

According to a biography on the company website, “he died away on his 100th birthday Saturday at his home in Farmington, surrounded by his adoring family singing Broadway show tunes to comfort him.”

The Founder was born on Saturday, January 7, 1923, in Pittsburgh, and he passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2023.

In his senior year at Lehigh University, Hardy enlisted in the American Army Air Corps and went on to serve as a radioman in World War II.

After working as a radioman for a while, he made the decision to join the family’s jewelry business. He also pursued his education during this time and obtained a degree in industrial engineering.

Then he founded Green Hills Lumber, which is today known as 84 Lumber and has more than 250 locations nationwide, with the help of his family and friends.

Hardy said he named 84 Lumber after the town where he resided and established his headquarters.

The Post-Gazette was informed by a former Pennsylvania governor and Homeland Security director. Joe was a true success story from the United States, and he was also a gentleman. He could have insisted on being treated like a tycoon, but Joe was the name he preferred.
