She began her professional wrestling career in January 2012 with the World Wonder Ring Stardom promotion, where she spent the following five years and won the World of Stardom Championship once. She subsequently joined the WWE in 2016.

Early Years: Where was Kairi Sane?

In Hikari, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan, on September 23, 1988, Kairi Sane initially opened her eyes. She was born in a Christian religious family with the name Kaori Housako. Kairi Sane started her career in wrestling by training with Stardom in 2011, and on January 7, 2012, she made her Stardom debut under the ring name “Kairi Hojo,” losing to Yuzuki Aikawa. However, she soon became a founding member of the Zenryoku Joshi stable, which is run by Aikawa. She won her first title on April 29, 2013, at Ryogoku Cinderella, then on June 23, 2013, she joined up with Yuhi, Kaori Yoneyama, and Christina Von Eerie to win the vacant Artist of Stardom Championship. On November 4th, they were defeated by Kimura, Alpha Female, and The Female Predator “Amazon” for the title. In May 2014, Hojo made her debut in Mexico by representing Stardom at “DragonMania 9” and “Lucha Fan Fest 8.”

On August 10, she reclaimed the title of Goddess of Stardom when she and Takahashi defeated Alpha Female and Kyoko Kimura. On March 20, she unsuccessfully contested Io Shirai for the World of Stardom Championship. On May 6, Hojo, Hiromi Mimura, and Konami won the Artist of Stardom Championship by defeating AZM, HZK, and Io Shirai. Without specifically naming WWE, Hojo announced her planned resignation from Stardom after the match. On May 14, Hojo’s Wonder of Stardom Champion reign came to an end when she was defeated by Mayu Iwatani during her ninth title defense. After losing the Artist of Stardom Championship back to AZM, HZK, and Shirai in their second defense, Hojo, Mimura, and Konami wrestled their final matches for Stardom as well as an unadvertised ten-match one-minute time limit series against other Stardom roster members. WWE (2016-2017)

In March 2017, Kairi signed a three-year contract with WWE, reportedly for $60,000 per year, which was less than she was earning in Japan. Kairi was contacted and given the opportunity to join WWE, with a contract beginning the following year in October 2016. On July 13 in her WWE debut match, she defeated Tessa Blanchard in the opening round of the tournament. She lost the title to Baszler again, ending her reign after 71 days, on October 28 at the WWE Evolution pay-per-view. She was given the opportunity to face Baszler again at NXT TakeOver: WarGames, but she was unable to win the match due to interference by Duke and Shafir once more. At NXT TakeOver: New York on April 5, 2019, Sane participated in a fatal four-way match for the NXT Women’s Championship, but she was unable to win it as Baszler submitted Bianca Belair to retain. After six days, on April 11, she lost to Baszler in a rematch after Io Shirai attacked Baszler, who was attempting to hurt Sane. On the 16th April 2019 episode of “SmackDown Live,” Paige made the announcement that she will be managing a newly formed women’s tag team made up of Sane and Asuka, who as a result were selected for the main roster. Cross was submitted by Asuka. Following that, Lynch and Flair accepted Kairi and Asuka’s challenge to compete for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs. In a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match at the event, The Kabuki Warriors successfully defended their championships against Lynch and Flair. Later, Sane made her TV debut on the 20th January edition of “Raw,” losing to Lynch through submission. The Kabuki Warriors’ 181-day run as Women’s Tag Team Champions—the longest reign for the belts to date—came to an end when they were defeated by Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross on the opening night of Wrestlemania 36. Becky Lynch, the current Raw Women’s Champion, gave up her title on the May 11 episode of “Raw” in order to go on maternity leave, but on the June 6 episode of “Raw,” which was taped in May and shown on tape delay, she sustained a serious head injury. The following week on Raw, Bayley violently attacked Kairi backstage during the Asuka vs. Banks Raw Women’s Championship match.
