L.A. Reid’s career began when he was introduced to a drummer from the rock band Pure Essence. Essence was the name given to it after it was renamed. He was a member of the band ‘The Deele’ in the 1980s. Before disbanding, it released the hit single “Two Occasions.”

Together with Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, he co-founded LaFace Records in 1989. It quickly became a popular hangout for a variety of artists. He then signed who had 14 on his label at the time. Toni Braxton, Outkast, and TLC were among the artists whose music was later released by the label. He founded Hitco Publishing Group in 1996. In 2000, he sold LaFace Records to BMG, which later merged with Arista Records. In the same year, he signed Avril Lavigne to his label. Following that, Ciara and P!nk were signed. Reid was named Chief Executive Officer of The Island Def Jam Music Group in 2004. He then went on to work as an executive producer on Mariah Carey’s ‘The Emancipation of Mimi.’

Reid has also helped artists such as Justin Bieber, Bon Jovi, Rihanna, and Kanye West launch their careers. He’s also collaborated with Jennifer Lopez on a project. He released Michael Jackson’s ‘Xscape’ in 2014. He announced in 2017 that he would step down from his position at Epic Records. L.A. Reid joined the panel of judges on ‘The X Factor’ in 2011.
