Landon Donovan is a former professional soccer player from the United States who announced his retirement from the sport following the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He was a winger for the United States National Soccer Team and the Los Angeles Galaxy. He was one of the most successful players in American soccer history. In 1999, he made his professional debut for the club Bayer Leverkusen II.

Early Life:

Landon Timothy Donovan was born in Ontario, California on March 4, 1982. Landon began playing soccer at a young age, alongside his twin sister Tristan, in Redlands, California. Landon’s father, Tim, was a semi-professional ice hockey player in Canada at one point, and he holds Canadian citizenship as a result of his father’s roots.

Donovan began playing soccer at the age of six, and he allegedly scored seven goals in his first game. Landon spent the next few years playing in a variety of Californian clubs, becoming fluent in Spanish as a result of the prevalence of Latin players in these leagues. By 1997, he had been accepted into the United States Youth Development Program, and he excelled at the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Championship.

Career:

Landon signed a six-year contract with Bayer Leverkusen shortly after impressing at the FIFA U-17 World Championship. Donovan struggled to adjust to life in Germany, despite his strong play on the field. As a result, the Germans loaned Landon back to the United States in 2001, where he played for the San Jose Earthquakes. During the next four years, he became an integral part of Major League Soccer, scoring numerous goals.

His loan period came to an end, and he was returned to Bayer Leverkusen. Donovan failed to adjust to German life once more and requested a transfer after only seven games. He was sent back to the United States, where he signed with the LA Galaxy as the highest-paid American player in the league. Landon performed admirably during his time in Los Angeles, playing alongside figures such as David Beckham.

Donovan was loaned out to a number of clubs during his time with the LA Galaxy. He spent a lot of time with Bayern Munich in 2008. He then went on to play for Everton in the English Premier League, where he quickly became a fan favorite. Donovan announced in 2012 that he was thinking about retiring from professional soccer. Nonetheless, he returned to training in 2013 and continued to perform admirably. By the end of 2014, he had announced his retirement from the game.

Donovan came out of retirement in 2016 and rejoined the Los Angeles Galaxy. He ended up playing in the final six games of the season and scoring one goal. This was the start of his second retirement. Surprisingly, Landon came out of retirement a second time two years later, signing with Liga MX club Club Leon. Donovan’s contract with Club Leon was terminated early in 2018.
