Silverstein graduated from New York University in 1952 after attending the High School of Music and Art in the city. He  met his wife, Klara, while working at a summer camp during his time in college.

Together with his father, they founded Silverstein Properties in 1957 under the name Harry G. Silverstein & Sons and acquired their first structure in Manhattan.

In 1952, Silverstein received his degree from New York University. In addition to purchasing a Manhattan skyscraper, Larry founded Silverstein Properties with his father and brother-in-law.

After striking out on his own, he bought more property in Lower Manhattan and Midtown. In 1983, he made a profit of almost $46 million when he sold a building to Coca-Cola for $57.6 million.

The National Urban League and the North American Illuminating Engineering Society were among the tenants of his buildings.

In 1980, Silverstein was chosen to build 7 World Trade Center. In 2001, his business was successful in its attempt to lease the World Trade Center.

After the 9/11 attacks, there was a disagreement with his insurance provider about his plans to rebuild. He kept the rights to 150, 175 and 200 Greenwich Street, but the Port Authority would eventually come to control One World Trade Center.

A few years later, he made an appearance at a protest in support of building workers and other public servants against insurance giants Allianz & Royal and Sun Alliance.

This was because, in his opinion, they had underpaid the insured by $800 million in a variety of insurance claims resulting from the September 11th attacks in 2001.
