Early Years and Bio

In Mobile, Alabama, on May 29, 1972, Laverne Cox was born. She was raised by her lone mother and grandmother in the AME Zion church and has an identical twin brother named M Lamar. Cox attempted suicide when she was 11 years old after experiencing bullying as a child for not acting manly enough.

She received her education at the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, where she first pursued dance before switching to creative writing. After that, Cox spent two years at Indiana University Bloomington before transferring to Marymount Manhattan College. She began her acting studies at the latter institution.

Cox has appeared as a model in many magazine and advertising campaigns. She was on the cover of Essence magazine in 2014 and in V’s yearly “Rebels” issue. The following year, Cox became the first transgender actress to appear in the annual “Nudes” issue of Allure by posing naked for the magazine. She has additionally on the pages of Time, British Vogue, and Entertainment Weekly. Beyond the page, Cox was the star of the luxury e-retailer 11 Honoré’s New York Fashion Week show in 2019.

Awards and Achievements

Cox is active in many LGBTQ-related causes. She took part in a campaign in 2014 to overturn an Arizona law that made it simpler for law enforcement to target transgender women of color on the streets.
