Pasalic was born in Mainz, Germany, and moved to Croatia when he was a young child. He started out playing football with the local NK GOK Katel Gomilica squad before joining the Hajduk Split youth system in 2006. He first gained notoriety as a young international during the 2011–12 campaign, when he scored 17 goals for the under-17s despite playing in the middle of the field, and when he scored the game-winning goal for the under-19s in a 3-2 victory over Hrvatski Dragovoljac to secure the club’s championship trophy.

On July 9, 2014, Chelsea revealed that Paali had been acquired for a reputed fee of £3 million. Paali declared upon joining, “I am incredibly delighted since I am now a Chelsea player.” On July 22, 2014, Paali signed a season-long loan agreement with Elche. He made his La Liga debut on August 25 in a 0-3 loss to Barcelona on the road, starting and receiving a booking. On April 29, 2015, Paali scored in a 4-0 victory over Deportivo de La Corua. He beat Málaga 2-1 on May 3, 2015, with a late goal that turned out to be the game-winner.

The 2015–16 campaign will see Paali on loan with Monaco, it was announced on July 3, 2015. Paali made his debut in the following game, a 2-1 victory over Palermo. In Milan’s 2-1 victory over Crotone at home, Paali also scored his first goal for the team. In the 2016 Supercoppa Italiana versus Juventus, Paali converted the game-winning penalty. Milan won their first major trophy since 2011, following a 1-1 draw in the regular-season match.
