Childhood and Education

Born in New York City, Mark Strassmann spent his formative years in Boston. He pursued his education at the University of Pennsylvania, where in 1980 he earned a B.A. with a concentration in American government. After graduating, he started working at WCVB-TV Boston as an associate producer.

He reported for Today and other NBC broadcasts throughout the whole of his four years there. The Branch Davidian standoff near Waco, the Columbine school shootings, the Atlanta Olympics, the Elian Gonzalez story, the Pope’s visit to Cuba, Princess Diana’s funeral, the 50th anniversary of D-Day, and the 2000 Bush-Gore election in Florida are just a few of the stories he covered for national and international news.

He has received numerous honors for his years of work in the journalistic industry, most notably the 2002 Emmy Award, an Ohio State Award, and two regional Emmy Awards for CBS News’ reporting on the D.C. sniper story.

Working Career

Amazingly, the gifted correspondent started his media career at WCVB-TV Boston in 1980—40 years ago. Amazingly, he worked for two years as an associate producer. He started working at WSAZ-TV in Wet Virginia, where he spent three years as a reporter.

Later on, he spent a brief period of time working for KMOL-TV San Antonio, WTTVT-TV from 1985 to 1987, and WFLA-TV Tampa from 1987 to 1995. He began working as a national correspondent for the Atlanta bureau of the NBC News Channel member station in 1997.

In 2001, Strassmann joined CBS News following four years at NBC. He has presented news and stories on CBS Evening News ever since joining CBS. She has covered a variety of stories for CBS, including the BP oil spill, Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, the Terry Schiavo right-to-die case, Southern church fires, Texas flooding, Colorado wildfires, and more.
