Marlon Brando Jr. was born on April 3, 1924, in Omaha, Nebraska, to his father and mother. His mother Dorothy (an actress), father Marlon (a chemical feed and pesticide maker), and older sisters Jocelyn and Frances raised him in Evanston, Illinois.

Dorothy and the children moved to Santa Ana, California, when his parents divorced in 1935; two years later, Dorothy and Marlon reconciled and moved the family to a farm in Libertyville, Illinois. Brando worked as an usher at a movie theater as a teenager.

After being expelled from Libertyville High School, his parents transferred him to Shattuck Military Academy in Minnesota, where he was also expelled; he then dropped out and came to New York, where both of his sisters lived. Marlon trained with Stella Adler at the American Theatre Wing Professional School.

His first picture was 1950’s “The Men,” in which he played a paraplegic veteran, and the following year, with the release of the film adaption of “A Streetcar Named Desire,” he became a Hollywood star (and sex symbol).

He then went on to feature in films such as “Viva Zapata!” (1952), “Julius Caesar” (1953), and “Guys and Dolls” (1955), winning an Oscar for “On the Waterfront” in 1954. Marlon made his directing debut in 1961 with the Western “One-Eyed Jacks,” and followed it up with roles in “Mutiny on the Bounty” and “The Ugly American” in 1962 and 1963, respectively.

He gained critical praise and multiple honors for “The Godfather” and “Last Tango in Paris” in 1972, and he earned $3.7 million for his role as The Man of Steel’s father in “Superman” in 1972. Brando received an Emmy for the ABC miniseries “Roots: The Next Generations” in 1979, after appearing in “Apocalypse Now.”

After retiring from acting in 1980, he reappeared in 1989’s “A Dry White Season,” for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, and went on to star in “The Freshman,” “Don Juan DeMarco,” and “The Island of Dr. Moreau” (1996). “The Score,” Marlon’s most recent film, was released in 2001.
