Martha McSally is an American politician who has been serving as the junior United States Senator for Arizona since the beginning of 2019. From 2015 until 2019, she was the United States Representative for Arizona’s 2nd congressional district. She was the first American woman to fly in combat and served in the US Air Force for 22 years, from 1988 to 2010. McSally was the first woman to command a fighter squadron and was a former colonel.

First Female U.S. Fighter Pilot to Fly in Combat

McSally finished her undergraduate pilot training at Williams Air Force Base, which is located east of Phoenix. In 1995, she joined an operational A-10 squadron that deployed to Kuwait.

She flew combat patrols over Iraq during this time, enforcing the no-fly zone over southern Iraq. She went on to become the first female fighter pilot in the United States to fly in combat and lead a fighter squadron. McSally was sent to Afghanistan in 2004, when her squadron received the Air Force Association’s David C. Shilling Award. On May 6, 2010, she left the United States Air Force.

McSally launched her candidacy for the United States Senate on January 12, 2018. She was defeated by Democratic nominee Kyrsten Sinema, who became Arizona’s first female senator, by a razor-thin margin. Senators McSally and Sinema are working together in the Senate.

A special election will be held in November 2020 to determine whether McSally will serve the remaining two years of her term. For the Class 3 Senate term, she will challenge astronaut and engineer Mark Kelly.
