Early Years of Matt Graham

Matt Graham was born in Gosford, New South Wales, Australia, on October 23, 1994, under the sign of Scorpio. Matt has a brother called David Graham, despite the fact that nothing is known about his family history.

When it comes to his academic qualifications, Graham received his early schooling at the Central Coast Grammar School. He does, however, have links to the school foundation.

Matt then enrolled at Newcastle University, where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) and a Bachelor of Business degree. In fact, Matt would frequently train in North America for the majority of his time and then return home for his exams.

Matt pursued engineering as part of his degree, expecting to one day work alongside his grandpa, who runs a civil engineering business.

His grandpa started the company 50 years ago with the acquisition of an excavator.

The career of Matt Graham

Matt Graham’s father, in fact, was a big skier, and he encouraged Matt’s mother to take up the sport as well. They took their first family ski vacation when he was three, thanks to his mother’s knowledge of the sport when he was a child.

When he was six years old, the family enrolled in a ski program at Perisher Winter Sports Club in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales.

They used to drive six hours every weekend from early July until mid-September to get there.

In most of his compositions, Matt also includes a reference to his brother, David. When his brother started sailing, he decided to join him.

Similarly, he observes another individual, Australian mogul skier Dale Begg-Smith.

In a nutshell, Begg-Smith was a member of Australia’s national ski squad. In the winter of 2008, when Matt was thirteen, he trained with Begg-Smith for a few months. Begg-Smith has been his mentor since that day, according to him.

With the help of the Moguls

At the age of six, Matt Graham enrolled in the Perisher Winter Sports Club’s mogul program. Matt initially took every class the resort has to offer during his introductory period. As a result, he competed in slopestyle (obstacle course racing), alpine racing, and mogul jumping competitions.

Matt excelled in the Moguls a year later, and at the age of twelve, he was selected for the Australian Olympic development squad. Back then, he was a member of the New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS) squad.

He was a member of the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA) at the age of fifteen. During his time there, he also sailed 8′ single-sail Sabot sailboats with his brother.

With his brother’s Sabot sailboats, Matt became four-time Australian champion, six-time state champion, and two-time state champion.

Yachting Australia, Australia’s national sailing organization, contacted them at the time to offer them an agreement. He did, however, prefer the Moghuls over the Sabots.

Injuries suffered  by  Matt Graham

During his professional career, Matt Graham was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his lumbar spine at L5. Well, this was his serious injury, and he had to sit out for eight months.

He was entirely out of the game for the first three months to allow his fracture to heal. During that period, he did not engage in any little or big activities such as jogging, swimming, walking, or even more.

Matt had a recreational mishap in Park City, Utah, around five years later, during an Australia team training camp. This happened when he and his colleagues were playing volleyball.

Well, the ball went over a chest-high wooden fence, and Matt tripped over it while recovering it. His radial head split off his ulna as he slumped on his right elbow. After that, he underwent surgery after an X-ray.

Matt shattered his collar bone in a freak accident on Saturday’s training session before the championships in Idre Fjall in December 2021. He is now awaiting surgery in Switzerland.

Indeed, this has dashed his dreams of earning Olympic gold in Beijing.
