The Arizona Cardinals selected Leinart in the first round with the tenth overall choice in the 2006 NFL Draft. With 405 throwing yards, he set an NFL rookie record. In November of his rookie season, he earned quarterback ratings of 74. For the 2007 season, he was the starting quarterback. However, after being released by St. Louis Rams defender Will Witherspoon, Matt Leinart shattered his left collarbone and was placed on injured reserve. Because of the injury, his season was over. After recuperating from injuries, Leinart played in the 2008 offseason as a starting quarterback. Kurt Warner reclaimed him after he was unable to perform well.

Leinart was also kept as a backup quarterback for the 2009 season. After Warner’s retirement, there was speculation that Leinart would take over as the starting in 2010. He was released in September 2010 in favor of Anderson, Max Hall, and John Skelton. After the Cardinals dismissed him, Leinart signed a one-year deal with the Houston Texans to serve as a backup quarterback for Matt Schaub. Matt appeared in 16 games during the 2010 season, while Leinart did not see any action at all. He returned to Houston as a backup for the 2011 season.

Matt’s right foot was injured in week 10 of the 2011 season, giving Leinart the opportunity to participate in games. He broke his collarbone, though, and was unable to continue the season. The Texans dismissed Leinart on March 12, 2012. In addition, on May 1, 2012, the Oakland Raiders selected Leinart as a backup quarterback for his old college colleague Carson Palmer. During the offseason, the Raiders did not re-sign him. Furthermore, the Buffalo Bills signed Leinart on August 25, 2013, and he was released by the organization on August 30, 2013. After his career as a professional football player came to an end, Leinart transitioned to studio analyst.

Nominations and Awards

He won the Archie Griffin Award and the AP National Championship in 2003. Heisman Trophy, BCS National Championship, Manning Award, and Walter Camp Award were all given to Leinart. Johnny Unitas Award, Orange Bowl MVP, Unitas Award, Quarterback of the Year, and Offensive Player of the Year were all given in 2005.
