At the 1982 Commonwealth Games, she also took home gold in the 200 m and silver in the 100 m.

A decade later, in the 1990 Commonwealth Games, she took home gold in each of her events. Ottey shares the record for the most women’s track and field medals ever with Allyson Felix with her nine Olympic victories over the course of her career. There are also six bronze medals and three silver medals. But she has never taken home a gold medal from the Olympics.

Ottey received recognition for his achievements in 1990 when he was voted World Athlete of the Year and Track & Field News Athlete of the Year. She is the first female athlete to complete a 60-meter sprint in under seven seconds (6.96 in 1992).

She now owns the W35, W40, and W45 age divisions’ official World Masters Athletics world records in the 100 and 200 meters. In a similar vein, Ottey, who won the 200 m at the 1995 World Championships at the age of 35, set a record for the oldest female gold medallist in history.
