He drove for Chip Ganassi Racing in six Indy Lights races in 1988, winning one at Pocono. In 1989, he and teammate Tony Bettenhausen attempted to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 in Bettenhausen Racing’s 1987 Lolachassis, but both failed.
Michael had a bad collision in practice at the Pocono Raceway race the following year, and he didn’t qualify. He and his father Peter won the Camel Lights division of the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1990. In the same year, he returned to the CARTseries, driving a 1987 Lola chassis in seven races and finishing 12th in his career-best finish in the Meadowlands race.
