Mike Dean Professional Career:

In 1995, he took his first steps on the Football League ladder as an assistant referee, and in 1997, he was elevated to the full referees’ list. Then, around the turn of the millennium, he became a referee in English football’s top division.
He took charge of the 2004 FA Community Shield match at the Millennium Stadium between Arsenal and Manchester United, which Arsenal won 3-1, and he also refereed the FA Trophy Final that year.

Arsenal fans started a petition in September 2015 to stop him from refereeing their team after a Premier League match against Chelsea, and it gathered nearly 100,000 signatures in less than a week.
He was chastised in January 2016 after delivering a straight red card to West Ham midfielder Sofiane Feghouli for a coming together with Manchester United defender Phil Jones, after which Jones writhed on the floor in evident pain, and Manchester United went on to win the game 2-0. Replays revealed that Jones was the one who had made the hazardous challenge on Feghouli and was fortunate not to be sent off. Feghouli’s red card was later revoked.

He was threatened online for sending out West Ham player Tomas Soucek in the final seconds of their 2-2 draw with Fulham, as well as for sending off Bednarek for a challenge on Anthony Martial in Southampton’s 9-0 loss to United. The Football Association openly judging two of his rulings to be incorrect. The FA revoked both red cards and asked him not to oversee any Premier League games the following weekend.
