Professional NHL Career of Michael Matheson

Matheson represented a West Island minor ice hockey team in the 2006 and 2007 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments as a kid.He started his junior career with the Lac St. Louis Lions in the Quebec Midget AAA league from 2009 to 2011. Matheson headed to the USHL’s Dubuque Fighting Saints, leading all defensemen in scoring in 2011-12.

In 2012-13, he committed to play for Boston College of the NCAA. His motivation for leaving Quebec was to improve in the USHL and NCAA.Matheson made Hockey East’s All-Rookie Team after his freshman year at Boston College.In his second season, Matheson was named All-First Team in Hockey East and All-Second Team East in the NCAA by the AHCA.

On April 30, Matheson chose to stay at Boston College for the 2014-15 season, despite rumors of his joining the Florida Panthers, the NHL team that picked him.He became 2014–15 team captain on May 8.

After the 2014-15 season, Matheson signed an entry-level contract with the Panthers, forfeiting his final year of NCAA eligibility. He then joined the Panthers’ AHL club, the San Antonio Rampage.

Matheson and Colton Sceviour were transferred by the Panthers to the Pittsburgh Penguins on September 24, 2020, in exchange for Patrick Hörnqvist.
