Mike Miller Childhood and Family

Michael Lloyd Miller, better known as Mike Miller, was born in Mitchell, South Dakota, on February 19, 1980. Mike’s parents also had three additional children: Jared, Chelsey, and Ryan.

He grew raised in the little hamlet of Mitchell and, like his older brothers, received his schooling at the local primary school. They excelled well in school because their father, Tom Miller, was the principal of an elementary school.

They did, however, receive something more amazing from their father. As children, all of the brothers excelled in athletics, and their father thought it was something he passed on to them.

Tom was a standout basketball player at Dakota Wesleyan University throughout his collegiate years. His siblings and nephews, who all resided in the same town, were also basketball fans.

As a result, Mike spent his childhood playing basketball with his siblings and relatives. He excelled in a variety of sports, including baseball and football, in addition to basketball.

Mike entered Mitchell High School in 1994. It was their district’s lone high school, and his siblings were members of the high school squad. He went there with his siblings and played with considerably older lads.

Miller feels that his game improved as a result of early opportunities to train with boys taller than him.

Mike was the most accomplished of the siblings, retiring as a great NBA player. His elder brothers, Ryan and Jared, both played collegiate basketball for Northern State University and went on to teach the sport.

Basketball Career of Mike Miller

College Career

Mike attended the University of Florida and played collegiate basketball for the Gators after graduating from high school.

Billy Donovan, the Gators’ head coach, had known Mike from his days at Mitchell School and was confident that he was the kind to play in the NBA. Mike rose to prominence soon, as predicted, by routinely scoring points for the Gators.

Despite the fact that they did not win any championships in his debut season, he had a terrific year, averaging 12.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Above all, he became known for his reliable three-point shooting.

His second season was more successful than his freshman season, as they advanced to the NCAA tournament finals. Miller led the Gators with 14.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game that season.

Unfortunately, the Michigan State Spartans upset them in the championship game and took home the title. Mike opted to forego his last two college seasons and declare for the NBA draft after his second season.

Professional Career

He was the fifth overall pick in the first round of the 2000 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic. Mike carried his collegiate form and enthusiasm into the NBA, where he had a terrific rookie season.

He appeared in all 82 games for the season, averaging 11.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest.

In the 2002-03 season, the Magic had a surplus of small forwards and opted to transfer him to the Memphis Grizzlies. Despite being traded to the Grizzlies in the last months of the season, his play remained constant.

Miller remained with the Grizzlies for five more seasons before being moved to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2008. He had plenty of time with the Grizzlies to establish his career.

He played for over a decade with different NBA teams after that, but he couldn’t match his previous success with the Magic and Grizzlies. In the 2010s, he did win two championship rings with the Miami Heat.

Mike returned to the Memphis Grizzlies for the 2013-14 season, but he had already lost the enthusiasm he had had when playing for them previously. He declared his retirement from all kinds of basketball in 2017 after suffering for a few more years.

At the time of his retirement, he was a member of the Denver Nuggets.

Mike has played for the United States national team in different international events in addition to his club career. In 2007, he was a member of the senior national squad that won the FIBA Americas Championship.

Coaching Career

Mike Miller joined the Memphis Tigers as an assistant coach under head coach Penny Hardaway about a year after retiring. He was a successful recruiter during his two years at the University of Memphis.

Mike has been the head coach of the Houston High School boys’ basketball team in Germantown, Tennessee, since 2020. He did, however, leave the position in November 2021.
