Nick Cave is an Australian musician, author, screenwriter, singer-songwriter, sometimes actor, and composer. He is well-known for both his baritone vocals and for leading the rock group “Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.” His music is typically distinguished by emotional ferocity, a wide range of inspirations, and lyrical obsessions with violence, death, and religion. He is known for his confrontational performances, shocks of black hair, and an emaciated, pallid appearance.

With slower, piano-driven ballads like “Into My Arms” and the Kylie Minogue duet “Where the Wild Roses Grow” (1996), he went on to find widespread success (1997). In 1989, he published his first book, “Then the Ass Saw the Angel,” and in 1990, “The Death of Bunny Munro” (2009). King Ink and King Ink II are books he has also written. He currently runs a newsletter called The Red Hand Files where he answers queries from fans.

At age 9, Cave joined the Wangaratta’s Holy Trinity Cathedral choir. He was kicked out of Wangaratta High School at the age of 13. After relocating with his family to the Melbourne suburb of Murrumbeena in 1970, he enrolled at Caulfield Grammar School as a boarder and later as a day student. When his father was killed in a vehicle accident, he was 19 years old. While she was releasing him from a St. Kilda police station where he was being detained on a charge of burglary, his mother broke the news of his father’s passing to him. The loss of his father “produced in my life a vacuum, a space in which my words began to float and collect and find their purpose,” he would later reminisce.

His father “passed at a period in my life when I was most bewildered.” After completing his secondary education, he enrolled at the Caulfield Institute of Technology to study painting in 1976, but he left the following year to focus on music. He went to his first musical performance at Festival Hall in Melbourne. I remember sitting there and experiencing the sound physically moving through me, he recalled. The latter band’s performance notably moved Cave, who claimed to have left the venue “a transformed person.” A shot by Rennie Ellis captures Cave in the front row, looking in awe at the Saints’ leader Chris Bailey.

What is the Professional Career of Nick Cave?

Nick Cave started a band with himself as the frontman, along with Mick Harvey on guitar, Phill Calvert on drums, John Cochivera on guitar, Brett Purcell on bass, and Chris Coyne on saxophone. After graduating from high school in 1977, they chose the moniker “The Boys Next Door.” Many of the band’s songs, such as “Nick the Stripper” and “King Ink,” reflect his sardonic sense of humor and fondness for parody. One of the band’s most well-known songs, “Release the Bats,” was written as an outrageous “piss-take” on gothic rock and a “direct attack” on the “stock gothic connections that less knowledgeable critics were apt to draw.”
