Oliver North: ‘Informed’ I will not be renominated NRA president:

Following a disagreement with NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre, NRA President Oliver North informed NRA members on Saturday that he will not be renominated president of the organization.

NRA officials confirmed to CNN that the statement was made in a letter read Saturday during the NRA convention in Indianapolis.

According to a video of the letter being read, North stated in the letter that he hoped to be renominated for a second term, but “I am now informed that will not happen.”

North, a key player in the Iran-Contra affair, was elected president of the NRA last year. LaPierre, the NRA’s longstanding CEO and public face at the time, described him as “hands down, the absolute greatest option to chair our NRA Board.” North joined the foremost gun rights group at a key juncture for it, as it responded to renewed calls for gun regulation in the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida. North was already a contentious figure due to the Reagan-era scandal over secret arms sales to Iran.

However, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that LaPierre informed the NRA board of directors that he had resisted North’s demand to resign and accused the NRA president of attempting to extort him.
