When Williams was 10 years old, his mother transferred him to Detroit to live with her and his stepfather.

For more than five decades, The Temptations was one of the most successful groups in soul music. However, the group experienced so many changes and problems that Williams and Melvin’s franklin made a pledge to each other that they would never leave. Franklin stayed with the band until he became physically unable to do so in 1994. However, he died on February 23, 1995, leaving Otis Williams, who was 53 at the time, as the group’s only surviving founding member.

Aside from singing, Williams is the co-author of the temptation book (1988), which served as both his autobiography and the group’s history. In 1989, He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the group Temptations. In 2006, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Stillman College.
