Pauline Hanson was born on May 27, 1954, in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and has six siblings. Her parents owned a fish and chip shop where her siblings all worked.

Education

She dropped out of school at the age of 15 and left home to work in a variety of menial secretarial and service jobs. In 1978, she started a plumbing and roofing business before opening a fish and chip shop in Ipswich in 1987.

Career

  • Pauline entered politics in 1994 and served on the Ipswich City Council until 1995, when administrative changes forced early elections. Her re-election bid was unsuccessful.
  • She joined the Liberal Party of Australia in 1996 and ran in the federal elections that year as the Liberal candidate for the House of Representatives from Oxley. After the party quickly disendorsed her, she ran for parliament as an independent candidate.
  • She emphasized race and immigration in her inaugural address. She claims that other ethnicities and cultures are invading Australia while offering nothing in return. Pauline believed that Australia’s lax immigration policies had resulted in significantly fewer job opportunities for its citizens.
  • In the New South Wales (NSW) Upper House election in 2003, she was defeated by John Tingle of the Shooters Party.
  • She ran as an independent candidate in the 2004 Federal Elections and received only 31.77 percent of the required quota of primary votes. However, she was able to recover her $150,000 deposit from the Australian Electoral Commission.
  • She founded the ‘Pauline’s United Australia Party’ on May 24, 2007. (PUAP). In the 2009 Queensland state election, she ran as an independent from Beaudesert and finished third.
  • She announced in February 2010 that she would de-register PUAP and relocate to the United Kingdom. However, after rejoining the One Nation party, she ran for a Senate seat from New South Wales in the 2013 federal elections and was defeated once more. She was elected as the leader of One Nation in November 2014.
